Checa leads the way after FP1 at Philip Island

Carlos Checa overcame an early crash in opening practice at Philip Island to set the fastest time of the session. The Spaniard dominated testing earlier in the week and continued his superb form to lap 0.6s faster than Jonathon Rea. The Irishman showed no ill effects of his testing crash and completed 23 laps aboard his Castrol Honda.

Rookie Joan Lascorz is making the move from World Supersport this year and the Spaniard’s early adaption looks promising; Lascorz ended the session third, just ahead of a late charging Leon Haslam. The Englishman set a late time to move up through the order. He ended the session just ahead of reigning world champion, Max Biaggi and Sylvain Guintoli.

Former MotoGP star Marco Melandri ended his first official WSBK session eighth fastest ahead of Michele Fabrizio and Eugene Laverty.
