Bradl, winner of last season’s Portuguese Grand Prix, dominated the session but Marquez’ late lap will steal most of the thunder from the opening session. The pace was particularly impressive in the intermediate class with Bradl lapping the circuit faster than the fastest lap of last season’s race. With track conditions obviously still to improve throughout the weekend it is clear that quite a lot of that improvement has come in the form of teams gaining a greater understanding of the Moto2 machines.
Englishman Scott Redding, sporting bright red hair in aid of comic relief, continued his impressive winter form to take third ahead of former 125cc champion Thomas Luthi. Andrea Iannone and Jules Cluzel were the only other riders to lap within a second of Bradl. Michelle Pierro, Alex di Angelis, Aleix Espargaro and Mattia Pasini closed out the top ten.
