The seeds for the Australian Open have been announced with Novak Djokovic and Caroline Wozniacki named the top seeds for the first Grand Slam of the season.
With the leading seeds all placed by their world rankings there was little surprise at the top of the rankings with reigning champion Djokovic ranked ahead of Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray in a highly competitive men’s field. Women’s number one Wozniacki is still searching for a first career Grand Slam crown but the Dane will once again be the top seed in the ladies draw.
Reigning Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, is the second seed ahead of Viktoria Azarenka and the resurgent Maria Sharapova. This tournament is pivotal for Wozniacki and Azarenka who both need to prove they deserve their lofty standings in the world game but with the likes of Serena Williams and reigning champion, Kim Clijsters, and Sabine Lisicki seeded in the mid-teens there is potential for upsets in the early rounds.
The tournament will begin on Monday with the draw set to be made tomorrow.
