Fenati continues to astound in Moto3

Romano Fenati’s stunning start to his Grand Prix career continued with the young Italian topping the times in first practice ahead of Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

With dark clouds overhead rain threatened throughout but the session was completed before rain started to fall. Fenati set his fastest time early in the session to finsh 0.25s faster than championship leader Maverick Vinales.

The pair enjoyed an exciting battle in the season opening Qatar Grand Prix and Fenati clearly seems eager to go one better than his runner up finish last time out. The Italian Federation rider has adapted incredibly well to the demands of life as a GP regular and is surely giving Vinales something to think about ahead of his home race.

Vinales, in his second year of his GP career, clearly has an edge in terms of experience and the Spaniard is clearly the most complete rider in Moto3 but if Fenati can continue to put Vinales under pressure it will be very interesting to see how the 17 year old deals with it.

Sandro Cortese was third fastest but the German was almost 0.5s off the pace with only Miguel Oliveria, Luis Salom and Hector Faubel also within a second of the fastest time.

Arthur Sissis continued to impress with the Australian rookie setting the seventh fastest time ahead of Danny Kent. Sissis finished in the top ten inQatarwith a very mature ride and his performance this morning will have seen his stock continue to rise.

Alex Marquez, the younger brother of Marc, is making his Grand Prix debut this weekend as a wildcard aboard a Suter Honda. The debutant ended the session 11th and just 0.001s slower than Alberto Moncayo’s Aspar KTM.
