The Brazilian has had a turbulent time in recent years having been outperformed consistently be his teammate, Fernando Alonso, but since mid-season he has improved his form and has now been rewarded with a one year deal.
The length of the contract however does indication a certain level of trepidation from Ferrari in his ability to consistently score points and offer them the potential to challenge for the Constructors’ Championship. It will also add smoke to the recent fires linking championship leader Sebastian Vettel with a move to the Italian team in 2014.
With new engine regulations coming into effect in 2014 a seat at Ferrari will obviously be a prime drive in the sport so the team are wise to keep their options open by retaining Massa for a single season.
With Nico Hulkenberg having been linked with replacing Massa it would be of little surprise if the promising German baulked at the prospect of only a one year deal.
Ferrari statement confirming Massa for 2013:
Scuderia Ferrari announces that it has renewed its contract with the driver Felipe Massa to the end of the 2013 race season.
The Scuderia’s driver line-up for next year is therefore made up of Fernando Alonso and
the aforementioned Felipe Massa.
