Dorna today confirmed that from 2013 the Moto2 class will have a mandatory minimum weight limit.
The issue of weight has been central to the debate for much of the current season with regards to Marc Marquez. Many have felt that the lack of a minimum weight in the class has played into the hands of the diminutive Spaniard. Riders such as Scott Redding, who is 15 kg heavier than Marquez, have clearly been hindered throughout the season.
However from next season the class will have a 215kg minimum weight limit. A Moto2 bike weighs in the region of 140kg so any rider below 75kg will have to carry ballast to make the limit.
The news is clearly a positive step to offering a level playing field for all riders in the class and it had been expected for some time. At the recent Japanese Grand Prix all riders were weighed in their full kit and the results of this have clearly been taken into account with the new weight limits.
