Lotus primed for a strong start to the season after solid practice

Kimi-Raikkonen-Monaco-FP3-2012Lotus enjoyed a very productive opening day to the season with Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean ending the day fourth and fifth fastest.

The pair were comfortable out on track and had strong longer runs indicating once again that they will be in a very competitive position during the race. Last year their main strength was their ability to manage tyre wear. This was a by product of the inability to get heat into the tyres in time for the first flying lap.

They still seem to have some issue with this but their single lap speed seemed solid today and it will only really become clear if this is the case after tomorrow’s qualifying session. Tomorrow looks set to be much colder than today with showers forecast before the start of qualifying and as a result getting heat into the tyres on the first lap will be more difficult.

Kimi-Raikkonen-Mirabeau-apex-2--Monaco-Qualifying-2012Speaking after the second session Raikkonen was pleased with the progress that the team has made:

“It’s good for the season to start and the car felt pretty strong out there,” said the 2007 champion. “I don’t think we’re the fastest but it’s a good start. It was nice to have a reliable day after spending some time in the garage during testing.”

Grosjean was also content with his showing today with the Frenchman saying that “the track felt good and the car felt better. We made good progress and I think there’s more to come.”
