Even though Michael Laverty raced in AMA Superbikes this weekend will be the Ulsterman’s first time racing at Laguna Seca. Speaking after FP1 the PBM rider felt that improving track conditions would be key to unlocking his speed having spent the opening session learning his way around the 2.2. miles track.
When asked after the session for his thoughts about the track Laverty said:
“It was tough to learn my way around with so much fog and the damp on some parts of the track,” said Laverty. “You had to be tentative on some parts in case the track was slick. It was actually tougher to learn Laguna than Sachsenring because of the undulations and there is no real places to rest. It’s a physical track to ride and you need to aggressive which when you’re learning the track.
“We weren’t too bad in FP1 but I lost a big chunk in S1 with the fast left hander over the hill. It’s completely blind at 180 and the bike is coming off the ground so you have to build up to taking it flat. The Corkscrew wasn’t too difficult, it’s slower than you expect at the top of the hill. As you go down the hill it opens out. It’s a difficult circuit to get your head around because it’s bumpy in some places. There’s a few areas where you need to be quite committed.”
Laverty finished the opening 45 minute session in 20th position.
