PBM to skip Sepang 2

michael-laverty-valencia-motogp-fp2-2013Paul Bird Motorsport has confirmed that the team will skip the second Sepang Test, scheduled for next week, and will instead focus on developing the bike from the team’s Cumbrian base.

Having raced at Sepang in October and completed the recent test the team felt that their time would be better spent preparing for the Qatar test and season opening Grand Prix. Speaking today Phil Borley, the team’s Technical Director, said:

“After weighing up the pro’s and con’s of participating in the 2nd Sepang test we have decided not to, primarily because of the amount of preparation with the new bikes we have to complete before Qatar,” said Borley. “There are also some developments we are working on and logistical challenges ahead, so our next time on track will be the Qatar test.”

michael-laverty-philip-island-motogp-qualifying-2013With Michael Laverty and Brook Parkes having completed 96 and 126 laps respectively of the circuit, the team felt that they had learned all that there was to be gained at the Malaysian circuit and that there was greater benefit to working from their workshop to prepare for Qatar:

“We were pleased with the performance and feedback of both of our riders at Sepang, and we were able to confirm a good base chassis setting, as well as electronic control setting improvements and some direction for future progress, so we do not feel there would be too much to gain from returning to Sepang.”

The team will once again race their own PBM chassis with an Aprilia engine and expect to have an upgraded engine from the Italian manufacturer in time for the season. The upgrade would leave the team running the same spec of power plant that Aleix Espargaro finished the 2013 season albeit with the Dorna ECU.
