Having moved to Red Bull over the winter Daniel Ricciardo faces the tough task of going toe to toe with Sebastian Vettel in the same machinery. The season is only one day old and while Vettel ended the day as the fastest Red Bull today showed that Ricciardo should offer competition within the Milton Keynes based team.
The Australian, who has previously raced for HRT and Toro Rosso, ended the day just over a tenth slower than his teammate with the sixth fastest time. After a difficult winter it was encouraging for Ricciardo to get miles under his belt but having been one of the first runners to switch to option tyres his time is perhaps not completely indicative of his outright pace.
“I knew the guys were doing everything they could since testing but still, we didn’t expect to do that many laps today, so I’m really happy and pleased for them,” said Ricciardo. “I think we have to be pretty positive with where we ended up today. We expected Mercedes to be quickest, but we were within a second of them today so that’s a lot better than we thought. Let’s see if it’s the same story after qualifying tomorrow, but for today we’re pleased.”
