In addition to the portfolio page which shows a complete record of my published work this gallery page will allow you to view some of my work as a photographer.
I am fortunate to be one of the very few journalists in the Formula 1 and MotoGP who are lucky enough to also be accredited to Grand Prix as a photographer. So whereas most within the paddock are only allowed to gain access to the paddock and shoot from within those confines I have been lucky enough to stand track side and take photos of the action!
The access granted to photographers at races is tremendous and to have the opportunity to stand trackside offers a much greater insight into the challenges facing the drivers and indeed shows their ability in a very different light to what is shown from the TV footage.
With the benefit of hindsight I am very glad that in 2011 I had the opportunity to see Marco Simoncelli in action. The swashbuckling Italian captured the hearts of the world with his aggressive style of riding and antics off the track where he offered a throwback to a bygone age.
It was ironic that the second MotoGP that I was accredited for in 2011 was the Valencia Grand Prix. This race came just after Simoncelli’s death in Malaysia and was an exceptionally sombre affair with the paddock awash with number 58 stickers and badges. The death of Simoncelli obviously cast a dark shadow over the paddock but Valencia was also an opportunity for everyone involved in MotoGP to come together and remember a fallen champion.
The paddock is always a place of terrific renewal. Attending the opening race of 2012 in Qatar showed that while the paddock will remember Simoncelli it has also moved on and with new 1000cc regulations is place MotoGP’s future is looking bright.
In addition to my work as a motorsport photographer I have also worked from the sideline of Ireland’s opening match of the 2012 6 Nations Championship also serving as my first match as a photographer.
Having attended rugby and soccer internationals at Lansdowne Road since I was a child the opportunity to get so close to the action was again one to savour.
